The education and upbringing of children during the first cycle of primary education in Serbia represent a unified process aimed at the holistic development of the child and their preparation for social integration. The goal is to form a socially responsible, empathetic, and critically thinking individual. However, modern society poses new challenges. Changes in family structures, accelerated digitalization, and the pervasive influence of media transform value systems and shape children’s behavior. The digital era brings undeniable advantages to education but also serious risks: alienation, reduced empathy, weakened creativity, and limited critical thinking. Children increasingly rely on easily accessible information while losing motivation for deeper learning and exploration. Therefore, the educational system must encourage the child’s active role, development of social and emotional competences, and a critical attitude toward technology. Pedagogical work in the first cycle should rely on interactive methods, linking theory with practice, and strengthening cooperation between school and family. The synergy of these factors enables balanced personality development and builds the foundation for a society that values knowledge, tolerance, and responsibility.
