Assistive technologies play a large part in empowering learners to participate actively in the learning process. This presentation introduces useful applications and software that students with disabilities (SWDs) have suggested to improve the learning environment of foreign language classrooms. Qualitative data were collected through interviews and surveys with four Japanese university students with varying impairments and staff from the student support office. Student participants were first asked how technologies have changed for them in relation to language learning over the past decade and which technologies were most effective in helping them to participate fully in the second language classroom today. Students were further asked what kind of technologies would be most effective for teachers to learn and use during lessons to create an inclusive classroom and how teachers could use technology to develop universal design learning materials. The research concludes that it is essential for teachers not only to understand advances in assistive technology, but also to have a working knowledge of various assistive technologies to better accommodate special needs students in this digital era.
