Presentation Type:Oral Presentation
Learning environments research is a field of educational research that focuses on the psychosocial aspects of the classroom and investigates how students’ perceptions of their classroom and learning contexts relate to cognitive and affective learning outcomes. While the field of learning environments has a substantial research base globally, studies into this discipline in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are less prolific. This presentation discusses a semi-systematic review of learning environments research conducted in the United Arab Emirates, mapping key themes, methodological approaches, and research outcomes. A semi-systematic review approach was selected as it is suited to synthesising research in developing and methodologically diverse fields, allowing for comparison across study designs, educational levels, and key areas of inquiry. The review included peer-reviewed studies published between 2012–2023, which reflects when learning environments research emerged in the UAE, and were identified through searches of databases including Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and Google Scholar. The analysis examined research themes, methodological approaches, instruments used and reported outcomes across educational levels and subject areas. Findings highlighted a strong focus on the adaptation and validation of established learning environment instruments for Arabic-speaking contexts. Overall, the studies consistently reported positive associations between learning environments and affective outcomes such as self-efficacy, enjoyment, and motivation. The literature review shows how learning environment instruments have been adapted and validated for non-Western settings, showing strong reliability and validity.
