As artificial intelligence transforms educational landscapes, higher education institutions face urgent challenges in deploying AI systems responsibly while preparing students for an AI-integrated future. This presentation examines the implementation of ISO/IEC 42001, the first international standard for AI management systems, within academic contexts, drawing from ongoing pilot projects at Université Laval and other Quebec institutions. Through a mixed-methods approach combining case study analysis, stakeholder interviews, and comparative policy review, this research investigates how ISO/IEC 42001 can serve dual purposes: as an operational governance framework for institutional AI deployments and as a pedagogical instrument for teaching responsible AI principles to students across disciplines. Key findings reveal that ISO/IEC 42001 provides universities with structured mechanisms for addressing critical challenges including algorithmic transparency in student assessment systems, data protection compliance particularly under emerging frameworks like Quebec's Law 25, bias mitigation in AI-powered admissions tools, and ethical oversight of research applications. Beyond operational benefits, the standard's systematic approach offers valuable curricular content for programs in computer science, ethics, public policy, and health sciences. The presentation demonstrates practical implementation strategies including stakeholder mapping methodologies, risk assessment protocols adapted for educational contexts, and integration pathways with existing quality assurance mechanisms. Special attention is given to the standard's alignment with UNESCO's Recommendation on the Ethics of AI and the Montreal Declaration for Responsible AI Development. By bridging technical standardization and educational mission, this research contributes to emerging scholarship on responsible innovation in education while providing actionable frameworks for institutions seeking to navigate AI integration ethically and systematically.
