Session: Session 3

Presentation Type:Oral Presentation
This research presentation is aligned with The HistoryMakers Digital Archive's mission to educate the world about the lives, histories and diverse cultures of contemporary STEM professionals, The ScienceMakers. Its aim is to help the global community understand the situated experiences of these professionals, while using their individual and collective experiences to push the rethinking of current paradigms that can negatively impact the advancement of youth in STEM throughout the world. It is through demystifying what is involved in becoming a STEM professional through using the lived experiences shared by the highlighted professionals in the Archive, that unique insights into changes related to who can become a STEM professional is evidenced. The recalling of experiences serves as an important way to humanize the commonly held negative and deficit-laden stereotypes which so often follow those STEM professional who do not readily come to mind when thinking about individuals who make significant contributions to STEM locally, nationally and globally. This proposal sheds light on findings that have resulted from transcript analyses of select vignettes from the Archive, which feature ScienceMakers' oral histories of personal and professional trajectories. Emergent themes from the analyses reveal details related to the (a) professionals' support, (b) cultures, and (c) impactful experiences. These themes can be used as sources of inspiration in educating children, youth, educators, administrators and policy makers throughout the world. Authentic pedagogical resources created with vignette data from this work serve to help in the teaching and learning of STEM globally.
