AI Feedback and Grading: Experiences from a University Level Writing Subject (106452)
Session: On Demand
Room: Virtual Video Presentation
Presentation Type:Virtual Presentation
This talk will look at the integration of an AI feedback and grading system into an undergraduate English language writing subject at a university in Hong Kong. AI is being increasingly used for feedback and potentially grading in education. While it can have advantages such as being available almost instantaneously and providing comprehensive comments on students’ work, there are concerns that it can miss the higher order concerns, and that the teacher and sometimes the student can be left out of the loop when AI feedback system are used. The talk will first consider how the rubrics and ‘instructions’ (i.e., prompts) for the subject were modified so that they could provide meaningful feedback from an Ai platform. It will then look at the feedback from students and teachers about the use of the system, and compare the types of feedback provided by AI with that from humans. Grading from the platform will also be briefly examined. Despite these pedagogical and ethical concerns mentioned above, educators around the world are facing pressure from administers to integrate more AI into their subjects. This talk focuses on an attempt to integrate AI in a way which is more pedagogically and ethically sound. The talk will include suggestions on best practices for educators looking to experiment in this area, as well as cautions as to what drawbacks to try to avoid. The talk will conclude with some predictions of future directions for AI feedback and grading systems and university level writing assignments.
