Session: Session 1
Room: Room 106 (1F)
Presentation Type:Oral Presentation
Engaging a critical race methodological approach, I analyze testimonios from members of Faculty of Color collectives across higher education institutions in the United States. Faculty of Color collectives are defined as groups of three or more Faculty of Color. Faculty of Color collectives support one another's engagement in the following: 1) providing support and creating joy that leads to building one another up and supporting one another's persistence in higher education, 2) helping one another through racialized and racist experiences in the academy; and 3) engaging in anti-racist change at their respective institutions.
I will share how Faculty of Color collectives form, which practices contribute to creating a restorative space amongst its members and how members share information, advice, and recommendations that supports one another’s’ advancement and retainment in higher education. Findings from this study will support faculty who seek to create their own collectives with preliminary information and advice on forming collectives, effective practices found across various collectives, strategies for sharing resources that have the potential to contribute to advancing racial equity in one’s own work (teaching, research, and service), and advice from current collectives. Findings will also inform university leaders and policymakers regarding the collective action and support provided by Faculty of Color collectives, or leaders, in improving campus racial climates. Through preliminary analysis, I have found that Faculty of Color collectives serve as a restorative practice and tool for negotiating and dismantling racism–a potential lever of change in the academy.
