Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has been extensively examined in relation to its pedagogical benefits, implementation challenges, and impact on learners’ academic and linguistic development across Europe. More recently, attention has shifted towards the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in educational settings, including CLIL classrooms. In the Albanian context, where CLIL is still developing, some teachers have begun to incorporate AI tools into their teaching practices for lesson preparation, classroom delivery, and student assignments. However, there is limited research exploring how teachers perceive the role of AI within CLIL environments. This study aims to address this gap by investigating three key research questions: (1) How do CLIL teachers perceive the role of AI in supporting student learning? (2) To what extent do they feel prepared to integrate AI into their teaching? and (3) How do they apply AI tools in their classroom practices?
The study draws on data from a subset of a larger international project (CA21114 CLILNetLe), based on semi-structured interviews with seven CLIL teachers working in Albanian upper secondary schools. The findings reveal that teachers generally view AI as a valuable resource that can enhance teaching efficiency and support student learning through scaffolding and interactive activities. At the same time, participants report concerns related to their limited preparedness, particularly due to insufficient formal training in AI integration. There is also a strong interest among teachers in professional development opportunities in this area. Ethical considerations, including responsible student use of AI, emerge as an additional concern, especially in the absence of clear institutional or national guidelines.
