In this workshop, presenters will discuss lessons learned from a diversity fellowship program that provides leadership training for early-career faculty. Informed by feminist practices, presenters will highlight the importance of relational leadership, which encompasses collaboration, connectedness, and ethics of care (Pless & Maak, 2005). Relational leadership serves as a strategy for sharing power currencies (power with instead of power over) and supporting thriving over surviving experiences for faculty of color (Erskine, Archibold, & Bilimoria, 2021). Promising practices for leadership development and perspectives will be shared from an early-career faculty fellow and administrators who created the fellowship program. Presenters will focus on employing relational leadership to nurture and achieve diversity, inclusion, and equity goals. In regards to learning outcomes, participants will be able to: a.) learn about relational leadership, b.) identify relational, systemic barriers to faculty advancement of leadership skills, and c.) discuss possible relational strategies and solutions. The presentation includes brainstorming ways to harness relational leadership to support faculty, such as fellowships, sponsorship, mentoring, coaching, and collaborations that attend to relationships and connections.
