This presentation discusses different approaches to ESLscapes, i.e. using linguistic landscapes in modern ESL classrooms. They aim at linking common features of academic linguistic landscapes, e.g. signboards on university campuses, with learning outcomes that can be achieved through interactive assignments. This approach transcends a single discipline and explores some of the gaps and opportunities in the use of English in Arabic medium universities. The talk presents a learning trajectory with three-step scaffolding of ESLscaping activities. Firstly, it engages new students who should locate particular areas in their colleges before presenting their findings through an interactive assignment in a Google Classroom. They will later demonstrate their current knowledge of the linguistic environment of the university campus by locating, photographing and describing a particular place. During this activity, they need to pick one signpost and write a short paragraph to express their opinion about the importance of this place for the university’s students and staff. At this stage, teachers can use an AI platform for generating meaningful guidance and feedback. Finally, students will compare and contrast signboards and discuss which ones carry clearer messages and are therefore more significant for their academic life. Thus, language learners stay motivated and demonstrate their critical thinking abilities and improve their writing skills. The suggested approach is universal in nature and can be applicable to other language classroom settings as a learning trajectory. Today, we cannot escape from ESLscapes in our teaching practice and should bring more of the outside linguistic world into our language classrooms.
