Presentation Type:Workshop Presentation
Many university-level online instructors face similar challenges: learners largely only interact with each other in written discussion forums and even then, students find the task onerous, boring, and often complain that it is nothing more than “busy work.” Rarely do they have contact with one another outside this context, and almost never do they have interaction with the course instructor other than passively receiving grades on assignments. Student interaction with course materials often comes from watching videos on double speed, using artificial intelligence to summarize readings, or taking automatically graded quizzes. This workshop is designed to allow participants hands-on practice with ways to increase student engagement in our online classrooms.
The workshop will focus on developing a course and accompanying assessments that focus on “engagement” in the online class as defined in Garrison’s (et al) Community of Inquiry: engagement between students, between students and the instructor, and between the student and the course materials. With a foundation in evidence-based practices, participants in this hands-on workshop will learn how to create a welcoming digital classroom that provides multiple modalities for students to engage and interact to demonstrate their learning, using tools and creating assignments related (but not limited to) inclusivity, active learning, and authentic assessments.
Come to this hands-on workshop and leave with tools you can actually use in your classroom or with your instructors to make the digital classroom more than just a rote “discussion board” chore and instead, actively engage students in online courses!
