Teaching literature is important for the learners, particularly English First Additional Language (EFAL) learners. Language practitioners argue that it widens EFAL learners’ vocabulary and provides opportunities to strengthen their language skills. However, research has shown that teaching literature is not happening as expected in the classroom, given, among others, a shortage of reading materials, teachers’ lack of knowledge about teaching literature, etc. This study aims to establish the challenges teachers face when teaching literature in the Grade 10 EFAL classroom. It also aims to provide recommendations regarding how the challenges identified could be overcome. A qualitative case study research design supported by the constructivist learning theory was used to collect and analyse data through observations and interviews. Two EFAL teachers were sampled purposefully in two schools located in the Limpopo Province. Data was analysed qualitatively by using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that the teaching of literature in the EFAL Grade 10 classroom is derailed by the following factors: Overcrowding, lack of reading materials, lack of interest in reading, reading anxiety, language barriers, codeswitching, and difficulties in analysing texts. Based on these findings, it is concluded that teaching literature in the EFAL classroom will likely remain a challenge if the factors identified above are not promptly addressed. Therefore, it is recommended that for effective teaching of literature in the EFAL classroom, teachers should be supported and provided with practical training workshops and coaching to help them overcome the classroom contextual factors stated above.
