Background: Simulation is an effective tool in medical education and can be used in paediatric placements to improve students’ confidence in assessment and management of a deteriorating child in a safe environment. We aimed to assess simulation as a method of improving medical students’ engagement with teaching along with their confidence in approaching paediatric assessment as preparation for their transition to future clinical practice. Methods: At a teaching hospital, we designed and ran high-fidelity paediatric simulations as part of the paediatric placement for 4th year undergraduate medical students. We then completed retrospective data collection utilising feedback from all students involved in simulation during the 2025-26 academic year. Feedback was collected via an online survey where students answered if they had previously been involved in paediatric simulation, if the simulation felt safe, their assessment on how simulation impacted their confidence as well as what they enjoyed or would improve. Results: 34 students completed our high-fidelity paediatric simulation of which 88% gave feedback. 80% of students reported this was their first experience of paediatric simulation and 100% of students reported it was a safe learning environment. Students rated the session highly, perceiving simulation improved their confidence in completing an A-E assessment, recognising signs of sepsis and completing an SBAR handover in a paediatric clinical context. Common themes included the simulation feeling realistic and students enjoying the hands-on approach. Discussion: Our results suggest simulation can be a safe and enjoyable method of encouraging students to actively apply and consolidate paediatric clinical concepts.
