The human cognitive system is limited in capacity of roughly 20s (Paas & Sweller, 2012), ability to hold information, and with maximum concurrent processing limit of two or four chunks of information. There is surge in the consumption of short-form digital, high consumption media content. Media formats alter patterns of information consumption. The study investigated relationship between short video consumption, inhibitory control, working memory updating and sustained attention. In pretest, baseline cognitive performance was established using SART, the Stop Signal Task (SST), and 2-back task. Post-test, participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions; a high-stimulation short-form video group, a low- stimulation long-form video group, or a rest control group. The same cognitive battery was re-administered using parallel forms to assess post-exposure changes. Self-reported questionnaire on frequency and nature of exposure to short video was collected.
Higher exposure to short-form video content had negative impact on inhibitory control and sustained attention, reflected in elevated commission error rates and greater reaction time variability on the SART, longer Stop Signal Reaction Times on the SST, and reduced working memory sensitivity (d′) on the 2-back task. Engagement rate and attention was inversely proportional.
